PURPOSE

Foundation - For many the foundations of religious belief have cracked or crumbled either under the literal and dogmatic religion imposed on them or the battering of scientific discoveries increasingly turning religion into myth. We seek to heal the wounds and provide new foundations for belief.

Contemporary - Some contemporary theologians are seeking—in language and thought—to re–formulate the truths given to us by previous generations. We provide forums for scholars to share their insights.

Theology - Development in science and the rapid connectedness of peoples and religions in this world compel us to conceive a new religious vision and passion for the twenty-first century. We seek out people who can help us articulate that new vision.
The Foundation’s Tasks

1. CHRISTIAN RECOVERY

Individuals who have experienced a dogmatic, literalistic and repressive form of Christianity often feel angry and alienated. Exposure to contemporary theologians provides a means to heal such scars.

2. CHRISTIAN JOURNEY

On our personal spiritual journeys, we find times in which we are dispirited and adrift. Exposure to the thoughts of contemporary theologians can provide new ways of thinking about God, the Bible and belief. We are given the opportunity to shape fresh theological understandings for our journey.

3. CHRISTIAN REFORMULATION

There are times when changes in history require Christians to reformulate the theology of the church. The Reformation was one such time. Today, in an increasingly diverse, economically integrated, democratically governed, and environmentally sensitive world, we have the exciting opportunity to be part of that centuries-long tradition as we seek to reformulate the gospel message for our own day and time.

In working at these tasks, The Foundation provides a community for those of a non-literalistic and non-dogmatic outlook.

The Foundation co-sponsors events with other theologically-oriented groups in the Houston area. We also provide speakers for churches on biblical and theological themes, and are working on linkage with similar groups around the country.
